Tailgating Season: RV Style
Tailgating is an all-American tradition rooted in the love of sports, good food, and community. Every football season, devoted fans take to stadium parking lots, sporting their team’s colors, with ice chest and grill in tow. It’s a chance to commune with other fans over BBQ while cheering on their favorite team. Tailgating has evolved over the years, from small beginnings at the Yale vs. Harvard football game in 1906 where fans brought their picnics and shared with other hungry game-goers to all-out tailgate parties complete with lawn chairs and a smorgasbord of game day delicacies. Even the vehicles used in tailgating parties are changing. Today, many RVers are joining the tailgating community—and making traditional tailgaters green with envy. Are you thinking about taking your tailgating game to the next level with your RV? We think you should. Here’s why:
All the Comforts of Home
While traditional tailgating requires the occasional trek to the port-o-potty and lots of hand sanitizer, RVs offer the convenience of a clean and private bathroom—with zero trekking. But having your own bathroom is just one convenience of tailgating with your RV.
Outdoor Entertainment Center
Some RVs, like this 2018 Keystone RV Avalanche 395BH Fifth Wheel, have outdoor entertainment centers, which are perfect for tailgate parties. Keep everything washed and tidy as you grill, keep cold drinks nearby in the mini fridge, and watch the game on your outdoor flat screen. An outdoor entertainment center adds a whole new level of convenience to RV tailgating.
Storage Space
Don’t love cramming your vehicle with tailgating supplies? If you have a car full of people, you probably don’t have much room for anything else. Don’t squish your passengers. In an RV, you have ample space for everything you need. If you’re an avid RVer, you probably don’t even have to pack much at all, because you already have everything you need on board.
Room for Lots of Guests
Invite as many people as you want! There’s plenty of space inside and out for old friends—and the friends you’ll make at the game!
Shelter
The fall is a volatile time of year—especially in Texas! It might be warm, it might be chilly, it might be sunny, or it might be raining. When you tailgate with an RV, you’re prepared for all kinds of weather. You can huddle under the awning in the rain, escape the heat in the air conditioning, or warm up inside with the heater turned on. And if your RV has slideouts, there’s plenty of room for you and your friends to hang out inside for a while.
Now that you know the benefits of RV tailgating, here are a few tips for doing it right.
Comfortable Seating
Don’t forget to pack as many lawn chairs as people you’re expecting!
Flat Screen TV
That’s right. And with the 2018 Keystone RV Avalanche 395BH Fifth Wheel, you’ll get a flat screen perfect for watching the game while you dig into your tailgate feast.
Wear and Decorate with Team Colors
What’s a tailgating party if you’re not supporting your team?
Games
Cornhole, horse shoes, ladder toss… It’s not a party without some games!
Food
This is probably the most important part of tailgating. Must-haves include: burgers, hot dogs, chips and dip, fruit/veggie spreads, and lots of sweet treats. With an RV, you can even have some ice cream stored in your freezer. Of course, if it’s a cold day, some hot cocoa might be preferred.
