Which Cargo Trailer Is Right for You?

Before lining up anything else, you need to know what you plan to do with your trailer. Light duty projects, like lawn mowers, cinder blocks, or even just moving boxes? Will you be hauling live stock or heavy duty equipment? And something else to consider, how long do you plan to own your trailer? Size and Weight

Once you know what you'll be hauling, the rest sort of falls into place. For heavy duty equipment (tractors, mowers, atvs, and the like) you'll need a cargo trailer wither a higher Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Of course, weight isn't everything, you've got to make sure you have enough surface area to hold your cargo. If you're moving a Bobcat, where you'll have a lot of weight concentrated in one small area you may want to consider more customizable options. For smaller machines, just make sure the weight is distributed as evenly as possible.
 

Frame

Most frames are made of steel but within that category, there are a few different shapes of steel to pay attention to. Box tubing frames will resist twisting and flexing better than any other framing material. And how will you know if the frame is made of box tubing? Simply stand on the rear corner and if it twists and flexes way a large amount, chances are it's actually an angle iron shape. If it twists and flexes only slightly, you're likely dealing with channel iron. And if it doesn't flex or twist at all, you've got a box tube frame. They may cost slightly more but you'll more than make up for it in longevity and durability.
 

Supplies and Tow Weight

Something that far too people cosider, what is your tow vehicle's maximum weight. Meaning, can your tow vehicle handle your trailer, your cargo, and still make it up a hill. This information should be in your tow vehicle's owner's manual but you should also be able to contact the dealership for this information. Once you know the limitations of your tow vehicle, just make sure you don't overload yourself. It happens, and it's easy to do, but try to plan ahead as much as possible. Now, most trailer dealers have a standard tow package you can pick up, to keep your vehicle safe while in transit. But just in case, be sure to consider picking up the following:

• Electronic brake controller
• Spare tires
• Hitch hardware (or adapter)
• Taillight protector
• Trailer ball
• Ball mount
• Pin, clip, and coupler lock
