Working From Your RV
Working from home is a huge relief to those who can, but it’s hard to find a workspace that’s dedicated only to working. Thankfully, your RV is not only an entirely separate location than your typical haunts at home, but it’s mobile! Taking your work with you has never been easier. Go on vacation, work if the mood strikes you, and explore nature when it doesn’t!
Below are a few of our favorite strategies for turning your RV into an effective mobile office space. If you want to know more, or you’re looking for the right RV to try this with, stop by Howdy RV! The friendly and expert staff in our Mathis, Texas, store are ready to help you find what you need at the prices you want.
What You’ll Need
Different jobs require different workspace features. It may be that all you need is space to drop a laptop, but if there’s more to your work, you’ll want to consider what you need in your setup. If you haven’t bought an RV to work from yet, you might consider searching for models that include or could be modified to include an office area. If you have your camper already, don’t worry—there are plenty of ways to modify it!
How Much Privacy?
There are some jobs where privacy is an absolute necessity. Whether you’re handling sensitive or confidential information or you just have a lot of calls to make, it would be useful to have a door you can close. If you’re camping solo, this isn’t as big of a concern, but it can still be nice to have an extra layer between you and the outdoors if you need to concentrate.
What Lighting?
Many jobs require specific amounts of lighting, especially if you host or attend frequent video chats. Natural lighting is often best, so working near a window can provide more flattering light than artificial lighting often provides. If you need more consistent lighting, consider a space where you can set up extra lamps. For jobs that require low light, avoiding windows is best.
How Much Noise?
If you’re worried about loud or intrusive noises interfering with your work, consider an RV that has built-in noise reduction. Soundproofing, insulated walls, and quieter running power systems will all help with that. If these aren’t an option, find a space that has irregular walls, or walls that you can place irregular decorations on. This will help prevent echoing and reverberation, and will provide an extra layer between you and outside your workspace.
Securing Your Office Items
Traveling with your work space is one of the best aspects of working from your RV, but travel means bumpy roads, turns, and other shifts to otherwise stable furniture. You’ll need some way to secure your office items in place, like pens, laptops, lamps, and other small desk items.
One way to do this is to pack up all your items whenever you hit the road. This is tedious, but secured items aren’t breaking or breaking other things. You might also modify your RV for smoother travel, including projects like fastening the desk and chair to the floor or wall. Either way, try to limit loose items during a drive.
Desk Space
If you need a clear surface to work on, you’ll want to think about what you use as a desk. Sometimes there are existing surfaces that have everything you need, like a dinette, your dashboard, or a picnic table.
If you don’t have sufficient space available, you might consider installing a desk to your RV. Place it in the bedroom, living room, or in a toy hauler’s garage area. You might need to arrange and rearrange things a few times to make the space work, but it can be a vital piece of your work space.
The desk itself is another variable. You might consider a fold-out desk to maximize space and avoid loose furniture, or a standing desk that won’t require a chair and has some health benefits. Whatever desk you prefer, there are ways to make it work with your RV.
