Utility Trailer Buying Guide
Looking for a utility trailer? The following shopping tips will help!
Start With Your Tow Vehicle
Tow vehicles aren't compatible with every utility trailer.
The first limitation is the hitching style. Utility trailers with a gooseneck hitch can only be used with a tow vehicle with a truck bed. Utility trailers with a bumper pull hitch can pair with a wide range of tow vehicles, including some minivans and SUVs.
The second restriction is the weight limit, which is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Remember that this includes the weight of passengers and cargo, not just the weight of the utility vehicle.
Think About the Cargo
First, does the cargo have a fixed size? Boxes can be arranged in different ways, for example, but a powersports vehicle cannot. If there are any width or length restrictions, be sure to take measurements and get a large enough utility vehicle.
Second, how much cargo will you be transporting? If you are moving a smaller collection of items, you can save money by buying a smaller utility trailer. If you need to transport a large amount of cargo, be sure you choose a utility trailer with enough space. Otherwise, you could be stuck making multiple trips to get everything moved!
