While it would be nice if you could ensure temperate and sunny driving days, the truth is that you’re going to have to tow your travel trailer through inclement weather at some point. Rain is a very common challenge for drivers who are new to towing because of the extra weight and bulk behind their vehicles that change how they have to drive. Fortunately, with some practice, you can make towing through wet weather a lot safer and easier to do.

Howdy RV is your Texas travel trailer dealer, located in Mathis. Below, we’ve put together some helpful advice on safely towing your travel trailer no matter what the weather’s like outside.

Gear Up

There are some pieces of equipment you can get that will help you to tow your travel trailer through rain more easily. For example, installing special rain tires on both your travel trailer and your towing vehicle will help you gain more traction on wet roads with their deeper treads.

Another useful thing to check on is your windshield wiper blades and fluid. If your blades aren’t clearing away fluid as quickly or thoroughly as you’d like, it’s likely time to replace them. A rain-repellent windshield spray can be another line of defense against the rain, too.

Check Everything

Double-checking your towing setup before departure will also help to reduce the risk of an accident. Make sure that your towing vehicle’s oil is clean, that the tires are aired up and in good shape, that the gas tank is full and that all lights and signals function.

On your trailer, check the hitch connection and make sure it’s secure, along with your towing chains. You should also examine the tires on your trailer and make sure that any electrical connections for signals and lights are operational.

Drive With Care

Once you’re out on the highway during a rainstorm, it’s essential to drive with extreme caution to prevent a crash. Increase your following distance so that there are several seconds between you and the cars ahead of you, and watch that envelope you’ve created as less scrupulous drivers may pull into it. Slow down your speed to 10 miles below the posted speed limit and stick to the right-most lane of traffic. Signal all maneuvers well in advance so that other drivers can see your intentions.
