With fall in full-swing, and the holidays fast-approaching, it’s likely that a vacation is the last thing on your mind.  You want to save your money for holiday expenses—and besides, the kids are in school.  But a vacation doesn’t have to drain your bank account, nor does it always require lots of time away from home.  In fact, a vacation doesn’t necessarily require you to leave home at all—not if it’s a staycation.  For RVers especially, staycationing is the perfect way to recharge without breaking the bank.  Not sure how to have a staycation?  Keep reading!  We have some ideas for you.

Pick a location.

Before you plan your staycation, decide what kind of experience you want to have.  If you live near a beach, you could have a beach escape for a couple days.  You could stay at a nice RV resort near some nature trails or a lake.  You could check out some local campsites.  Do some research on RV friendly vacation spots near you and go from there.  Chances are there is a lot your city and surrounding area have to offer.

Re-discover your locale.

It’s easy to lose sight of your city’s charm when you’ve lived there for so long.  Taking a staycation is the perfect way to rekindle some wonder.  Even if you live in a small city, there are probably plenty of corners you haven’t explored, yet.  Take some time to discover those corners with your family.  Hike a trail you’ve never hiked before, eat at that new restaurant downtown, or try a new activity like surfing or a ropes course.

Bring your pets.

Maybe on a long, far-from-home vacation, bringing your pets along is a bit of a hassle.  You may even opt to hire a pet-sitter or kennel them.  But when you’re staycationing, there’s no need for that.  You’re not going far, and you probably won’t be gone more than a couple days, so bringing the family dog along is no problem.  So go ahead; spend some quality time with your furry friends during your staycation.

Unplug.

Try to take a break from your phone and computer during your staycation.  You may still be in the same 20-mile radius, but that doesn’t mean you should feel any obligation to keep up with work.  No need to scroll Facebook or Instagram or check your email, either.  You’re on vacation, so feel free to unplug.

Document your staycation.

You never miss out on photo ops when you’re on vacation, so why miss out on them on your staycation?  Treasure the moments you get to spend with your loved ones, and take photos so you can look back and remember the fun times you had together exploring your neck of the woods.

Staycationing is the best way to rest and connect with your family without spending a ton of money.  Plus, planning a short, local escape eliminates the pressure to squeeze as many activities as possible into your time off.  Because you’re not going far and not spending much money, you’re freed up to rest the way you want to rest.  Go hiking or swimming, or spend the day shopping and eating your favorite foods.  Maybe you just want to spend the morning having a cup of coffee with your spouse.  Do it.  If you don’t get to do everything you want to do this time, there’s always next weekend.  So load up that travel trailer or fifth wheel and spend a weekend at home.
