Part of owning a travel trailer includes maintaining all of its components so that you get the most life out of your investment. Even without a combustible engine, there are things that have to be cared for! Models with slide outs, which make the interior space bigger, need special attention to prevent issues like leaks, mold, and poor functionality.

1. Regular Cleaning and Lubrication

One of the best ways to care for your slide outs and prevent common problems is to regularly clean and apply lubrication. Debris and grime can build up and damage the tracks. You’ll need to be careful during the cleaning process and make sure everyone knows you are underneath the trailer!

After cleaning the tracks, it’s helpful to apply lubrication to keep them operating smoothly. You can usually find spray-on lubricants made specifically for this task. However, you should always refer to your owner’s manual before applying any product! Using the wrong lubricant can lead to additional concerns.

2. Battery System

The battery system in your travel trailer keeps things operating how they should. Keeping the battery charged and well-kept is one of the biggest factors of a working slide out. If you notice the slide out is sluggish during setup and it’s been cleaned, lubricated, and there isn’t too much weight, you might need to have a professional take a look at your battery system.

3. Weight

Why does the weight within the slide out matter, though? Well, too much weight within the slide out area can prevent the mechanism from working properly. Attempting to move the slide out when it’s too heavy can also damage the tracks over time. Especially in trailers that utilize a slide out for the bedroom or living spaces, you’ll need to be aware of how much stress you’re putting on those slide outs! It can be useful to add stabilizers underneath each slide out if you anticipate traveling with more people or if you’re staying in one place for an extended period.

4. Appliances, Plumbing, and Electronics

Not all travel trailers have the same layout and some slide outs will support your kitchen or bathroom appliances. In these scenarios, you’ll need to pay extra attention to the condition of the slide outs in order to keep all components in working order. You should have these appliances and the slide out they reside in regularly inspected and maintained.

5. Adjustments

Like the alignment of your tires, travel trailer slide outs need to have the right adjustment. The orientation of your slide out should be centered from one side to the other for the best movement. It’s possible for the adjustment to become off-center and you’ll need to monitor any changes. If you think the adjustment of a slide out is off, you should schedule a time to visit your mechanic.
