If you’re spending a lot of time in your fifth wheel for frequent traveling or full-time living, then you’ll want to make the space feel like your own. The factory-standard decoration in many fifth wheels isn’t terribly exciting since neutral colors are often used for mass appeal, but you can change that easily. Decorating your fifth wheel isn’t too dissimilar from decorating a house or apartment, although there are a few challenges you’ll want to understand before you begin.

Add Color

Color is a very easy way to personalize a room and make it a more pleasant space to spend time. You can paint the walls of your fifth wheel just like you’d paint the walls of your home, so head to the hardware store and pick up some paint chips. You can opt for an all-white interior with your accessories being the pops of color you need, or your can paint a bold accent wall and theme the rest of your decor around it. 

There are many aspects to color theory and selecting colors that harmonize visually with one another, which is why you often see oranges paired with blues and yellows paired with purples. Blues tend to be calming and warm colors more energizing, but the truth is that your own favorite colors are the ones you should use. If you like big bright primaries, then use them. If you prefer a softer palette, then select some pastel shades to work with.

Cultivate Houseplants

While you don’t have the advantage of a backyard with a garden when you’re on the road, you can easily keep some houseplants in your fifth wheel. You’ll need to make sure that you anchor them in place when you’re traveling so that the dirt doesn’t spill, and you may want to use lightweight plastic pots instead of traditional ceramic or clay pots. Some options include:

  • Herbs grown in a planter on your kitchen window for use in cooking
  • A plastic pot with flowers or vines in a macrame plant holder can add a bright pop of green to your living room
  • Mount some succulent holders to the wall of your bedroom for a whimsical touch

Soften Up the Space

Fifth wheel furniture is designed to be sturdy, durable and easy to clean. It’s not exactly meant to inspire delight visually. You can alter it, though, by adding some soft fabrics to make it more cozy with any of the following options:

  • Bring in a treasured heirloom quilt or crocheted afghan to throw over the couch.
  • Stuff a plush duvet into a colorful duvet cover to spread over your bed. 
  • Toss some fun throw pillows onto chairs and beds. 
  • Let the kids bring in their favorite fleece character blankets and stuffed toys. 
  • Put a woven fabric wall hanging up in the living room. 
  • Toss a patterned tablecloth over your dinette.
  • Hang up breezy sheer curtains in coordinating colors.

Upgrade Your Lighting

The lights in your fifth wheel will be more utilitarian than anything else, and while they’re useful, they aren’t very warm. You can swap out LED lights for incandescent bulbs if you want a softer light, though. Purchasing some lightweight plastic lamps to place on tables will also allow you to better control the lighting. String lights can be hung around the perimeter of a ceiling for a fun and eccentric touch. If you enjoy the warm glow of candles at home, avoid the hazard of flames by using no-flame LED candles that are battery-operated instead.
