5 Ways To Get Better Sleep In Your RV
Recreational vehicle living can be thrilling and rewarding, but some elements of it do prove challenging. One aspect of RV life that people commonly struggle with is sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep in your RV may not always be possible because you’re constantly in a new place and in a bed that isn’t your own. Fortunately, there are several easy steps you can take to make sleeping in your RV more successful.
Howdy RV, located in Mathis, Texas, is your local RV dealer. We’re happy to share camping tips with you, which is why we’ve drawn up these recommendations for ways you can get better sleep in your RV.
1. Upgrade Your Mattress
The mattress that the factory installed in your RV’s bedroom is probably not going to be the absolute best mattress ever. However, many manufacturers do offer upgrades to the mattresses they install. This lets you get a mattress that’s more comparable to a residential-style mattress so you’ll sleep much more comfortably. You can choose between inner-spring or memory foam or whatever is similar to your bed at home.
2. Buy New Sheets
Coarse, low-thread-count sheets won’t make anyone sleep soundly. Even if you don’t have the funds to upgrade your mattress, you can buy nicer sheets in a higher thread count and a natural fabric like cotton. Invest in a down comforter with a cover that you can easily remove and wash between trips for a lightweight but cozy top to your bed. You may also want to get nicer pillows that have the appropriate firmness so you won’t suffer from neck or back pain.
3. Control Temperature & Humidity
It’s a lot easier to get to sleep if the room you’re sleeping in is a little bit cooler. RVs can have pretty intense temperature variations, especially if they’re older and not well-insulated. If you’re traveling in the summer, you may want to invest in a window air-conditioning unit to keep your room at around 68°F (or warmer if you desire). Even investing in a fan to circulate air will help you stay cooler. And if you’re camping in cold weather, a space heater can help keep the room warm enough for you to fall asleep.
People generally prefer the humidity of a room to be between 30 and 50%. Ambient humidity varies greatly between places, so if you go to the Southwest, you’ll experience drier air, and if you head further north, you’ll experience wetter air. You can invest in either a humidifier to moisten the air or a dehumidifier to draw excess moisture out of the air until your room is at a comfortable mean humidity level.
4. Keep Your Campsite Secure
One of the challenges of sleeping away from home is feeling insecure and unsafe. You’re in a new environment, surrounded by strangers or even wild animals, and you might jump at every new sound or every bright light you see. Make a security checklist that you go through each night to help give yourself peace of mind by ensuring that food is locked up, the stove is turned off and the RV is locked securely.
5. Invest In Sleep Accessories
Finally, you can always invest in some affordable accessories to help you sleep. Many people find the scent of lavender essential oil calming, so you can spray your pillows with this to help you doze off. Earplugs help to block out excess sound. A sleep mask and blackout curtains will shut out the light from the campground or the sunrise so you won’t be woken up too early. A white noise machine can help to drown out campground noises.
Of course, you can also invest in a four-season RV with a high-quality mattress and climate control to give yourself the best chance possible to fall asleep easily while you travel.
